Cleanup

Today I went to James & Jacky's place to help them clean up. The flood waters have started receding in a big way, so there were loads of people out doing the same.

The street they're on, Westerham, is just brutal. All the greenery that went under the flood waters is now an awful muddy grey-brown. There's debris all over the place, and the whole neighbourhood smells like a sewer. All things considered, the mood was pretty good. It seemed like there was lots of help to go around, which was lucky since there's so much work to do. Throughout the day strangers kept coming by to offer another set of hands, and a few people brought food & drinks. Two girls on a scooter randomly dropped off an esky full of ice & drinks, some chips, and a big tray of donuts. They were heroes, second only to a neighbourhood woman who brought us cupcakes.

James and Jacky are healthy and remarkably happy despite this. You can see the floodline behind them on the brick wall.

Better shot of the floodline here.

Everyone is dumping their ruined stuff by the curb. It's nuts to see how much stuff is really ruined. It gets worse when you put this in perspective. A relatively small portion of Westerham Street was underwater. There are whole suburbs that were hit even harder.

This photo breaks my heart. Luckily, they've got digital backups of these.

This photo also breaks my heart, but for different reasons.

To get to the north side of the river I had to go through St Lucia campus. It too smells like a sewer right now.

The St Lucia riverbank from the Eleanor Schonell bridge.

A couple of the UQ lakes. You can see the floodlines here. All the walkways in this area are covered in 6 or 8 cm of thick brown ooze. This place was so beautiful.
