Ducks, Stars, and an Unexpected Guest

It's been rainy here for the last several days - perfect weather for the new batch of ducklings I've seen around the UQ lakes for the last couple weeks. Luckily the one day I had my camera out it was sunny.

They were all cute and nice...

Then I got too close and the dad swore at me...

And then they took off.

I've been experimenting with more astrophotography from the back yard. Even though there's not as many stars that are visible with the naked eye, the extra city light makes framing silhouettes easier and more dramatic.

Looking west at Orion.

Looking southeast at Crux and the Milky Way.

Last night we had an unexpected visitor. Mary and I were hanging out on our computers when we heard a bunch of racket outside and on the roof, followed by scritching and scratching on metal. We looked out and saw this idiot hanging off the screen right out from our kitchen window. I have no idea what he was doing, but he was certainly doing a lot of it. After I took this shoddy photo I opened the door to try to get another one but he got spooked and jumped back into the trees.

  1. Maybe he could smell the pineapple sitting on your windowsill...

And I'm jealous of your clear skies - tonight is meant to be great for viewing Saturn, but it will be too cloudy here. Great astrophotography!

  2. I saw Saturn and its rings through a telescope for the firt time a few weeks ago - its beautiful. Do you have a scope or binos or what?

No clear skies now unfortunately - it's been raining continuously for the past couple days with no signs of stopping. It reminds us of March back home.

  3. Ha! The cherry blossoms are already in full swing and it's sunny today. I have a basic telescope, I can easily see Jupiter's four big moons.

  4. I can't believe the cherry blossoms are out already, that's nuts. Usually it's not until the end of March.

Wow that's great about the scope. I haven't seen jupiter's moons yet. I'm not too sure where it is in the sky right now. We're in the southern hemisphere, maybe it's only up during the day? I'm not sure. I'll have to look at Stellarium later. Next week I'm going out with my friend with the scope again, so hopefully I'll see some more interesting stuff.

  5. I thought it was ridiculously early for cherry blossoms, but then I kept doubting myself...

  6. Hahaha, love the photo (and caption) of the angry duck squacking at you.
