Critters of Melbourne

While we were in Melbourne we also visited the Melbourne Aquarium and the Melbourne Zoo. There were so many cute and scary animals that I felt they deserved their own post.

Antarctic penguins!

The jelly fish were beautiful too because of the cool lighting.

Upside down jellyfish.

Fairy penguins!

We got to the elephant enclosure just in time to see them feeding them by throwing 40 or 50 apples and gourds into their wallowing pond. The one right in the water was 22 months pregnant.

It was super hot the day we visited the zoo and everything was just nuked, including this lion. We felt sorry for all the cats with their big coats.

Mini dilophosaurs from Jurassic Park.

We saw this peahen and her chicks out on the picnic grounds.

A painted ibis.

Some kind of heron.

The zoo also had a butterfly enclosure. Even though it was 100% humidity and over 30, it was still cooler than outside in the sun.

Plus meerkats!

This guy was just splayed out on the ground because it was so hot.

Huddled under a log in the shade.

The brave little sentinel.

A short clawed river otter.

A nest of wombats, sleeping in their burrow.

  1. Pat, the picture under the one of the heron that has the four white birds with their reflections in the water and a tree above them with white blossoms... that photo is stunning.

  3. Mary and I knew you would like the meercats June. They were awfully cute, all melted from the heat. My favourite was the wombats though. They're great.
