Australia Day

Tuesday was Australia day here, so we had the day off. We got up stupid early in order to go up to Kondalilla falls near Maleny, about an hour north of Brisbane.

I haven't seen one of these in a while.

In the parking lot of the start of the hike there was a baby bird on the pavement that had fallen out of the tree. It was covered in ants biting it all over. A couple of the girls with us picked it up and painstakingly picked all of them off. We left it in the crotch of the tree it fell out of, so hopefully the parents find it and it makes it.

This is the empty skin of a cicada.

Cute, in an ugly way.

The Obi Obi Creek valley.

We saw a couple of these guys on the trail. This one was about a meter long. He was the little one. The other was closer to 2 meters.

Lake Baroon, the lake that the Obi Obi leads into.

We had lunch here.

On the way up we passed the Glasshouse mountains. These are made of the hard central core of lava plumes from ancient volcanos. The soft parts of the mountains have eroded over millions of years and all that is remaining are these rocky spurs.

Some flowers from one of the lookouts.

  1. Always remarkable to see the different lifeforms down under. The Cicada shells are very familiar to me though- used to marvel at them when we'd find them every summer in the midwest US.

  2. They're great macros shots of the cicada shells. I'm seeing plenty of sunrises at the moment (grumble grumble short winter days)
