Some Ideas Canada Should Adapt from Australia

I've been here long enough now to notice some things that Canada really ought to adopt from Australia. Such as:

  • Including GST on all listed prices. It's great to pick up an item listed at $2.50 and pay $2.50 at the till. In Australia it's illegal to display a price without including tax. Tax is listed as a subtotal on the receipt/invoice.
  • Doing away with pennies. Here, all prices are to the penny (so an item can be $1.69 for example), but when you get to the till the total price is rounded to the nearest 5 cents. As a result, much less shrapnel in your pocket.
  • Fast and free money transfers between banks in lieu of cheques. No one here uses cheques. Instead, you get someone's account info, punch it into your online bank, and the money moves immediately. Paying rent or bills is easy, as is giving money to an individual.
  • Prostitution is legal in safe, clean, regulated brothels. Fuck you, Pickton.
  • In every park there are electric or wood barbeques that are free to use. Barbequeing is a right of life.
  • The public transit here uses oyster cards, which you scan as you get on and off the train/bus/ferry.
  • Public transit emphasizes the use of trains and light rail, with a 25 year expansion plan for new rail lines. The Brisbane area system extends approximately 300km from end to end.

    1. Right on! I really miss not having bbqs in the parks here, it makes it really difficult if you don't have a car to lug around a bbq.

But what about being able to drink a beer in the park with your bbq with impunity!?

    3. I agree with all of your ideas, except the bank transfer one- I'm pretty sure it's right in Canada's Charter of Rights that the Canadian banks are entitled to their pound (kilo?) of flesh, and anything that would cut into profit margins of the big banks should be discouraged- just keep upping the service fees- we love them.
